Reflections
You are invited to join us as Curanopy releases a devotional and a corresponding reflection piece. The devotionals will vary in their form and format and we hope that you will allow us to be open to the ways the Spirit is inspiring us. For example, at times the devotional may be offered in the written and/or spoken word, or in a piece of art or song.

Reflections | Issue 1: Sacred Self-Care: A Soothing Balm to the Soul
In this reflection piece, we explored Sacred Self-Care by Dr. Chanequa Walker-Barnes—a compelling guide to holistic well-being that nurtures and soothes the soul. Caring for ourselves in sacred ways is a deeply respectful act that honors our worth and equips us to carry out our responsibilities with greater clarity and strength.
Through insightful reflections, Dr. Walker-Barnes said, “self-care is an act of faithful stewardship, whereby we graciously and gracefully tend to the health and well-being of the divine gift that is our lives” (p. 34). The guide emphasizes that self-care is not merely self-indulgent but rather an act of reverence towards ourselves and others.
She reframes self-care as sacred, advocating for rest, renewal, and balance. By nurturing our emotional, physical, spiritual, and mental health, we honor both ourselves and the vital work we are called to do (Walker-Barnes, 2024). Understanding the act of reverence promotes a more holistic and purposeful engagement with self-care, aligning personal well-being with a broader sense of gratitude.
Dr. Walker-Barnes posits that individuals are inherently valuable, a “good and perfect gift,” and challenges readers to consider how this belief might reshape their self-care practices (p. 17). Building on this foundation of inherent worth, Sacred Self-Care presents daily practical methods to promote holistic well-being. Embracing sacred self-care soothes the soul, affirms our worth, honors our need for care, and cultivates the strength, clarity, and resilience needed to participate fully in our lives and communities.
As you engage in your self-care journey, consider these reflective questions to deepen your practice and bring intentionality to your well-being:
What does rest mean to me, and how can I honor it more intentionally?
How can I extend grace and compassion to myself during exhaustion or struggle?
How can I listen more deeply to my body and emotions to understand what I need?
What would it look like to treat me with the same care and love I offer others?
What daily or weekly practices can I implement to nurture my soul and replenish my energy?
Identify one way you choose to show yourself self-love.
